CALIFORNIA: Protesters jeer chancellor

A university chancellor apologized to jeering students Monday for the use by campus police of pepper spray against protesters in a standoff last week. The campus police chief and two officers at UC Davis have been suspended. An hours-long rally Monday, attended by well over 1,000 students, faculty members and even parents, was capped by demonstrators pitching tents on the campus, defying rules forbidding such encampments. Chancellor Linda Katehi told the crowd: "I'm here to apologize. I really feel horrible for what happened on Friday." Many answered with boos and catcalls.

ALASKA: Stevens prosecutors ripped

Federal prosecutors pursuing the late Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens engaged in "significant, widespread and, at times, intentional" misconduct but should not face criminal contempt charges, a special court investigator concluded. In a 500-page report, whose conclusions were made public Monday, special investigator Henry Schuelke III determined that prosecutors systematically withheld potentially useful information from Stevens' defense team in 2009. He and his colleague, William B. Shields, further concluded that some of the withholding was "willful and intentional." District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan had ordered the special investigation. Schuelke concluded that criminal contempt charges should not be brought against the Justice Department prosecutors.

COLORADO: Armed airman ends standoff

An airman with a pistol barricaded himself in a building at Schriever Air Force base, which controls all GPS satellites, but surrendered Monday evening, officials said. The building was evacuated during the standoff. No shots were fired and no one was injured, said base spokeswoman Jennifer Thibault. She said the airman is a member of a security squadron and it was his own handgun. How he got the weapon past security and onto the base was being investigated. The airman is facing a discharge over a matter in civilian court, Lt. Marie Denson said.
