WISCONSIN: Anti-abortion law blocked

U.S. District Judge William Conley issued a temporary restraining order Monday evening to block enforcement of a new state law that bans doctors who lack admitting privileges at nearby hospitals from performing abortions. Conley granted the order following a hearing in a lawsuit filed Friday by Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin and Affiliated Medical Services. It alleged the requirement would unconstitutionally restrict the availability of abortions, violates the U.S. Constitution's due process guarantee and unconstitutionally treats doctors who perform abortions differently from other doctors. The restraining order will remain in place pending a fuller hearing July 17.

MARYLAND: Manning defense begins

Lawyers for Pfc. Bradley Manning, who gave mountains of classified information to WikiLeaks, opened their defense at his court-martial Monday at Fort Meade with a leaked video of a U.S. helicopter attack in Baghdad, footage in which airmen laugh about their targets. The video is the basis of an espionage charge alleging Manning had unauthorized possession of national defense information. He has admitted leaking the 39-minute cockpit video showing a 2007 attack that killed 11 men, including a Reuters news photographer and his driver. The Pentagon concluded that the troops reasonably mistook the journalists for enemy combatants.

ALASKA: Family of 5 among the dead

A South Carolina family of five are among the victims in a plane crash that left 10 dead. H. Wayne Clayton, the father of Kimberly Antonakos, said she and her family traveled to Alaska from their home in Greenville, S.C., for 10 days of vacation. Dead are Kimberley and Melet Antonakos and their children Olivia, 16, Mills, 14, and Anastacia, 11. The de Havilland DHC3 Otter went down Sunday morning at the airport in Soldotna, 75 miles southwest of Anchorage.
