NATIONWIDE: Migrant sweep nabs 3,100

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said Monday they had arrested more than 3,100 criminals and others living in the country illegally, the largest such effort in the agency's history. The six-day operation, dubbed "Cross Check," nabbed 3,168 offenders, including in all 50 states, three territories and the District of Columbia. Of those, 1,477 had felony convictions such as murder, manslaughter, attempted murder, kidnapping and child abuse.

CALIFORNIA: Drug lord gets 25 years

Former drug kingpin Benjamin Arellano Felix was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison for leading one of the world's most brutal cartels, a Tijuana-based ring that raised Mexico's drug violence to a new level and tried to hide the bloodshed by dissolving bodies in drums of chemicals or burning them in the desert. Noting that the plea deal set 25 years as the maximum, U.S. District Judge Larry Burns told the court in San Diego the 58-year-old drug lord deserved a life sentence.

MINNESOTA: 5 in family killed in crash

A 17-year-old was behind the wheel of a semi pulling a box trailer converted into a recreational vehicle when the 57,000-pound rig crashed through a guardrail and into a Kansas ravine Sunday, killing five of the 18 people on board. Adam Kerber's license wouldn't have allowed him to drive a commercial vehicle like that because of its weight and because it was carrying more than 15 people. But neither of the restrictions applied because of a loophole in Minnesota state law regarding private RVs. The 13 injured included Kerber, who was still in critical condition Monday. All those injured or killed were friends or members of the Kerber family of Jordan, Minn.

FLORIDA: Plane crashes in supermarket

A small plane crashed into the Northgate Shopping Center in Deland, injuring five people. The plane apparently crashed into the roof of a Publix supermarket.
