DETROIT — Police say a 15-month-old toddler was accidentally given alcohol mixed with apple juice at a Michigan restaurant.

The toddler’s parents called police at 4:30 p.m. Friday when they noticed the toddler acting funny at an Applebee’s restaurant in Madison Heights, according to a statement by police.

Madison Heights police officers discovered that a leftover mixed drink combination, mislabeled as apple juice, was accidentally mixed with other apple juice then served to the child, according to a statement issued by the department.

“It’s being investigated by the detective bureau,” Sgt. Brenda Hillman said Monday.

Applebee’s corporate spokeswoman Nancy Mays said Monday that the restaurant chain is conducting an independent review of the situation.

“Obviously any situation like this is unacceptable,” she said in an emailed statement. “We are cooperating with local authorities and conducting our own investigation to assess exactly what happened.”
