(AP) — The school principal who authored a scathing letter that mocked students is facing a demotion.

Litchfield Elementary School Superintendent Julianne Lein is recommending to the school board that Ron Sterr be demoted to assistant principal at another school.

Sterr is currently on leave after he was removed from Litchfield Elementary School.

The letter sent home with second graders on Jan. 26 included disparaging remarks about students who could not complete their "easy" math assignments.

Sterr says he wrote a joke letter in response to caustic comments made by "an individual" and a teacher accidentally sent it home. He says he openly opposes the views expressed in the "mocking" letter he wrote.

Lein said Sterr has a good work history, but needs additional time to rebuild trust with the community.
