Sen. Charles Schumer says he wants to make it tougher for people from 14 countries to visit the United States on open-ended tourist visas.

The New York Democrat says the countries on the list pose a security risk.

Ordinarily, people issued certain tourist visas may come and go from the United States over a period of several years until the visa expires.

Schumer wants people coming from such countries as Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran to reapply for a visa each time they visit. He said the need for a change was illustrated by the foiled plot to blow up an airliner on Christmas Day.

The rule change could also make life tougher for thousands of foreigners who travel back and forth from the United States to visit relatives. - AP
