Shooting fuels ire for Palin target map
At the height of the debate about the overhaul of the nation's health care system last year, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin put Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on a list of Democrats who were in Palin's "crosshairs" because of their support for the bill.
The Web image, which has been taken down from the SaracPAC website but was still posted Saturday night on Palin's Facebook page, displayed a map showing crosshairs drawn over the members' districts, accompanied by the members' names. Giffords was one of the list's top "targets" in the midterm election.
In an interview after vandalism to her district office in March, Giffords referred to animosity toward her by conservatives. "For example, we're on Sarah Palin's targeted list, but the thing is, that the way that she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gunsight over our district. When people do that, they have to realize that there are consequences to that action," Giffords told MSNBC in March.
On Saturday, hours after the shooting, Palin issued a statement expressing "sincere condolences" to the families of Giffords and other victims. - AP
