3 wounded in New York City's Times Square shooting

Three people were shot in Times Square early Saturday after an argument between teenagers, according to the NYPD, which said the potential shooter was in custody.

The victims — an 18-year-old woman with a graze wound to the neck, a 19-year-old man struck in the right foot and a 65-year-old man struck in the left leg — were brought to Bellevue hospital in stable condition, an NYPD spokesman said.

The shooting happened around 1:20 a.m. near West 44th Street and 7th Avenue when a 17-year-old boy got into a verbal dispute with the 19-year-old; the two apparently didn't know each other, the spokesman said.

A physical description of the shooter was put out over the police radio, and the 17-year-old was detained. Charges include attempted murder, attempted assault, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a weapon in a restricted zone: Times Square, where it’s generally illegal to possess a firearm even if otherwise licensed. The teen was charged as a juvenile.

Video posted to social media shows people scrambling for safety and medics tending to the shooting victims.

Newsday reported earlier this week that New York City experienced historic lows in shootings over the first seven months of the year, with an 18% drop last month, the lowest year-to-date total since 1994, the start of modern record-keeping.

About 218,000 people visit Times Square every day, according to an annual report from the Times Square Alliance.
