Source: Mueller working with Schneiderman in Manafort probe

Special counsel Robert Mueller has been working with New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman on the probe of Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, a source said.

Investigators have been looking at the financial transactions of Manafort, who has not been accused of any wrongdoing, but is seen as a central figure in Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s 2016 election interference.

Politico first reported the collaboration between Mueller and Schneiderman. Multiple reports previously have said that Manafort is being investigated for possible money laundering and investigators are looking at his lobbying work and business transactions, including real estate deals.

In July, FBI agents raided Manafort’s home. Manafort had led Trump’s campaign until August 2016, resigning after reports of his business dealings with pro-Russia figures in Ukraine.

The involvement of Schneiderman opens up the possibility of New York State filing charges. Politico quoted a source saying no charges were imminent.

Schneiderman’s office declined to comment.

Schneiderman has been a frequent Trump critic, filing suit against him claiming that Trump University defrauded students. Trump signed off on a $25 million settlement of the suit last year, not admitting wrongdoing but agreeing to reimburse thousands of students who said they were scammed into paying for classes that were worthless.
