Trump's second impeachment trial: Tuesday updates

What happened:

• Former President Donald Trump's second impeachment trial began Tuesday, 34 days after the events of Jan. 6 that prompted it. The lead House impeachment manager showed a stark, sometimes graphic video of the insurrection, along with some of Trump's words from that day.

• The opening day featured debate over whether it is constitutionally permissible to prosecute Trump after he is no longer president. Trump attorney David Schoen said moving forward with the impeachment trial is unconstitutional and wrong. But the Senate voted 56-44 that Trump is subject to the jurisdiction of a court of impeachment for acts committed while president, though he is no longer in office.
• Trump's lawyers insist that he is not guilty, and that his fiery words were just a figure of speech as he encouraged a rally crowd to "fight like hell" for his presidency.
• This is the first such trial for an ex-president. There have been four presidential impeachments in U.S. history. Trump was acquitted in his first impeachment trial just over a year ago, when Sen. Mitt Romney was the only Republican who voted to convict him, and he is expected to be acquitted with Republicans' support again this time.
• The trial resumes Wednesday at noon.
