HONOLULU (AP) — A U.S. official says Iran "is standing in its own way" by issuing a one-month deadline for the West to accept Iran's response to a U.N.-drafted nuclear plan.

National Security Council spokesman Mike Hammer says Iran has no reason to reject the proposal to swap most of its enriched uranium for nuclear fuel.

Iran insists its nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes, such as electricity production, and says it has no intention of making a bomb.

Hammer said Saturday that the West's approach offers a way to fulfill Iran's request for fuel and has the support of other countries.
