COLORADO: 2 teens shot; teacher grabs suspect

A teacher tackled a man armed with a high-powered rifle just after two students were shot Tuesday at a middle school in Littleton, just miles from Columbine High School, site of one of the nation's deadliest school shootings. A male and a female were shot about 3:30 p.m. outside Deer Creek Middle School, a sheriff's office spokeswoman said. The teens were taken to a hospital and expected to survive. Student Steven Seagraves said he was about 10 feet away when an adult approached students and asked: "Do you guys go to this school?" When they said they did, he shot them, Seagraves said. Teacher David Benke, a 6-foot-5 former college basketball player, tackled the man as he tried to reload. He was identified as Bruco Strongeagle Eastwood, 32, who had visited the school before and was inside the building shortly before the shooting.

WASHINGTON: Airport body scanners coming

The first three of 150 full-body scanners planned for U.S. airports will be installed at Logan Airport in Boston next week, Homeland Security officials said Tuesday. In the next two weeks, they plan to install another one at O'Hare Airport in Chicago. The rest of the 150 machines purchased with $25 million from President Barack Obama's 2009 stimulus plan are to be installed in airports by the end of June, an agency spokeswoman said. Body scanners have been available for years, but deployment has been slowed by privacy objections.

Bill for Native Hawaiians passes

Congress moved closer Tuesday to allowing Native Hawaiians to establish their own government despite objections from Republican Gov. Linda Lingle. By 245-164, the House passed a bill that gives Native Hawaiians the same opportunity provided to Alaska Natives and 564 Indian tribes, the chance to govern their own affairs in partnership with the state and federal governments.

ALABAMA: Papers involve suspect's husband

The husband of the professor accused of fatally shooting three colleagues once said he wanted violent revenge on a doctor who gave his wife a bad job review, according to documents that feed growing evidence the woman showed signs of violence long before the latest episode. Amy Bishop is charged with killing three colleagues at the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Feb. 12. Investigative files released to The Associated Press by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives show that Bishop and her husband, James Anderson, were questioned in 1993 in the attempted mail bombing of Dr. Paul Rosenberg of Children's Hospital in Boston. The ATF report quoted a witness saying, "Anderson stated . . . he wanted to shoot him, bomb him, stab him or strangle Rosenberg."
