TEXAS: Stab suspect's fantasies
A man accused of stabbing more than a dozen people at a Houston-area college told investigators he had fantasized about cannibalism and necrophilia and about cutting off people's faces and wearing them as masks, according to a court document made public Thursday. Dylan Quick, 20, also told an investigator he had researched mass stabbings on his home computer about a week before the attack at Lone Star College in Cypress, according to a search warrant affidavit. Quick is being held without bond on three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for Tuesday's attack that injured 14 people. Only one person remained hospitalized. Attorney Jules Laird said Quick was on suicide watch and will stay in jail as he undergoes a psychological evaluation.
WASHINGTON: Immigration talks done
Four Democratic and four Republican senators have reached agreement on all the major elements of sweeping legislation to remake the nation's immigration laws, and expect to unveil the bill next week, lawmakers and aides said Thursday. After months of arduous closed-door negotiations, senators had no issues left to resolve in person, and no more negotiating sessions were planned. "All issues that rise to the member level have been dealt with," Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said. "All that is left is the drafting." Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said the bill probably would be introduced on Tuesday.
GEORGIA: Hostage taker's ruse
Lauren Brown, 55, had long planned his ploy to lure firefighters to his home Wednesday, demanding that his utilities be turned back on, police said Thursday. Brown opened fire on the first SWAT officer to enter his bedroom. The man was hit in the arm, but returned fire, killing Brown. Firefighters had found him in bed with an apparent medical condition, but he pulled a handgun to take them hostage.
