National Grid, Village of Freeport launch post-Sandy aid program for hard-hit businesses

National Grid and the Village of Freeport are working together to help businesses that were hit hard by superstorm Sandy get back on their feet, according to officials from the village and the utility.
National Grid has launched an emergency economic and community development program for businesses that “sustained damages to their facilities and have lost their natural gas service,” a spokesman for the utility said.
The program is under way in Nassau and Suffolk counties as well as Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, the spokesman said.
In Freeport, the utility is partnering with Freeport Community Development Agency to distribute funds, a village spokeswoman said.
Commercial businesses can apply for a grant of up to $250,000, said Lee Westerlind, a manager for National Grid.
The funds can be used for “plumbing inspections, new heating equipment for the most vulnerable business customers, or to support commercial redevelopment and rebuild communities,” said a statement released by Freeport village officials.
National Grid asks applicants to start the process by calling the utility at 855-496-9359. The Freeport Community Development Agency can be reached at 516-377-2203.
