Nature trail sign said to need work in East Hampton Village

There is something wrong with the sign on the nature trail in East Hampton Village, said Dianne Benson, head of the nature trail committee of the Ladies Village Improvement Society — and she was able to explain the problem to the village board in just a few words.

“No. No. No.”

She said at the board’s Dec. 21 meeting that the sign tells people not to do this, not to do that — not to feed the animals, for example — and fails to explain what is special and beautiful about the trail. She did admit some cautions were appropriate, especially for people who come to feed the ducks. “Bagels and hot dog rolls are not good,” she said.

Benson said the trail off Huntting Lane should have a better sign, perhaps in a small kiosk, explaining something about the animals and plants along the trail, and suggesting people get cracked corn for food. The Ladies Village Improvement Society would build the kiosk, she said, and her committee, along with the garden club, would put their heads together to come up with the precise messages.

“Of course, it will be submitted for [village board] approval,” she told Mayor Paul F. Rickenbach Jr.

The offer was unanimously accepted by the village board.

“You’ve hit a home run,” the mayor said.
