Neighbors Tuesday mourned the death of a Sound Beach man who many described as quiet yet friendly.

George Markov, 41, was found in his Whitestone Road backyard Sunday with a gunshot wound to the head. Det. Sgt. Thomas Groneman, of the Suffolk Police homicide unit, said officers are trying to piece together the events that led to Markov's death.

Neighbors said Markov, who worked in computer information technology, moved to the area about five years ago and lived with his wife and young daughter.

"He was a sense of security for everybody," said Linda Trefilio, who lived next door to Markov. "Anybody who would drive by . . . he would wave and make sure he'd come around the side of the house. All was well if George was home."
