CICERO, N.Y. -- Despite all the accolades that Brianna Nerud has attained over her high school career, there was always one glaring omission from her high school resume: a Federation title.

And it was something that weighed on the North Shore senior's mind all season long.

"I really, really wanted it," Nerud said of the elusive title. "It was something that I was always thinking about when I was running."

After winning the steeplechase yesterday, she won't have to think about it anymore.

Nerud led from start to finish to win a rain-soaked 2,000 steeplechase on Day Two of the state Federation Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. The senior clocked a 6:33.85 to win her first career state and Federation championship.

Nerud's title came after a year of playing bridesmaid. She finished second to Ward Melville's Mary Kate Anselmini in the steeplechase at last year's outdoor state meet and was second to Bronxville's Mary Cain in the 1,500 at the indoor state meet in March.

Nerud made her race count, taking the lead from the opening gun and never looking back. She opened up a full straightaway lead by the end of the race as she won by 15.09 seconds. "That's sort of what I've been used to all season," the Syracuse-bound senior said of running by herself for most of the race. "I kind of knew I'd have to just push myself and race against the clock."

Nerud set her eye on the national record of 6:29.20 (Madeline Meyers, Seattle, 2011) before the meet, but her final time was short of Anselmini's meet record (6:33.14) by .71 seconds.

"I was trying to go 76 seconds each lap, since that's a 6:25 pace," she said. "I really wish I got the record, but it's still a great feeling."
