The Town of Babylon has received six proposals from companies seeking a contract with the town for residential garbage collection.

The town is coming to the end of a 20-year contract extension with Babylon Source Separation Inc. (BSSI) of West Babylon.

The town says annual 3 percent increases in that contract led to Babylon paying more than $27 monthly per household for garbage pickup in recent years, an amount that is more than double what nearby towns are paying for similar service.

The six companies that responded to the town’s request for proposals are: Jody Enterprises of Medford; Brothers Sanitation of Holbrook; Dejana Industries of Port Washington; BSSI of West Babylon; Winters Brothers of Westbury; and Encon Industries of Westbury.

An evaluation committee will review the technical proposals over the next two weeks before looking at the cost proposals submitted by the companies, said town spokesman Tim Ruggeri.

The evaluation committee is made up of Barbara Stevens, Philip Scala and Joseph Conway.
All three are experts in waste management who do not work for the town, Ruggeri said, although Stevens’ company Ecodata Inc. has had contracts with the town in the past.

Committee members are paid $250 per hour.
