New Cassel facility eyes energy rebates

North Hempstead Town’s “Yes We Can” Community Center, a platinum LEED-certified facility, is eyeing energy efficiency rebates for some of its features.

The New Cassel site boasts rooftop solar panels, electric vehicle recharging stations, and geothermal heating and cooling systems.

Through National Grid’s gas efficiency program, the town already has received a $20,750 rebate for two condensing boilers, two indirect water heaters, and pipe, wall and roof insulation, officials said.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, gives third-party verification to green buildings by measuring a construction project’s environmental impact. By meeting prerequisites, projects can earn points to achieve various levels of certification. Platinum is the highest.

The town awaits two more rebates, both from LIPA, spokesman Ryan Mulholland said. One is for about $200,000, for the center’s solar panels. The second is for lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, he said, adding that the estimated amount of that rebate was unknown.
