New deadline for East Hampton lighting code

The East Hampton Town board again has extended the deadline for local businesses to conform to the outdoor lighting standards of its Dark Skies code.

The code was adopted in 2006 to cut back on light pollution by limiting the kind of lighting that can be used on commercial property and requiring cutoff fixtures that limit the spread of light from an outdoor source.

The town code was supposed to go into effect on Oct. 6, 2010, which gave businesses four years to meet standards, but was later extended to Dec. 31, 2011.

On Thursday, the town board voted unanimously and without debate to extend the deadline once again, to March 31.
