New deal lets Smithtown dump clean debris in Islip

The Town of Islip’s Resource Recovery Agency Tuesday agreed to enter into a new three-year agreement with the Town of Smithtown to dispose of Smithtown’s construction and demolition debris.

Under state regulations, the town can accept clean fill — such as concrete, wood, dirt and asphalt roofing shingles — at its Blydenburgh Road Landfill Complex in Hauppauge.

The new agreement permits Islip to take clean fill generated in Smithtown, estimated at 5,000 tons a year, during the next three years. The agreement has a two-year renewal option.

Islip will charge Smithtown $45 a ton, which Islip RRA president Christopher Andrade said was the going market rate.

“It’s a great way for two towns to share a resource. It fosters cooperation and helps both towns’ residents,” Andrade said, adding the two towns have cooperated on clean fill for more than a decade.

The agency was created in 1982 to manage the town’s solid waste and support services, including collection, landfill, recycling, composting and its power-generating waste-to-energy facility.
