New Mastic Beach zoning commission on hold
Mastic Beach officials plan to appoint a new zoning commission only after carefully considering new members for the board, the village’s mayor said.
The South Shore village, which formed in 2010, is developing zoning codes to govern land use — a step it is required to finish by September under state law. Its first zoning commission, made up of village residents, produced a plan that was unpopular with many residents, and trustees voted Feb. 8 to appoint a new commission.
The new commission could be chosen at any time, Mayor Paul Breschard said at a village meeting Tuesday night.
“Some ideas have been bandied about. The desire is to get as many people involved as possible,” Breschard said. “We have nothing together yet.”
The most controversial sections of the first zoning proposal concerned a planned waterfront development district, which many residents opposed. Overdevelopment of the waterfront should not be part of the code, Breschard has said.
