New mayor appointed in Mill Neck

There have been changes at the top of Mill Neck’s village government.

After a dozen years as mayor, Theodore B. Smith Jr. stepped down last month, and Deputy Mayor Peter Quick, left, was appointed by the village board to replace him for the remaining year of his term.

Quick then appointed Smith to fill the newly created trustee vacancy for the remainder of Quick’s trustee term.

Smith has been on the village board since 1992 and was appointed mayor in April 1999 when Mayor Roberta Murray stepped down. He has been elected three times to 4-year terms.

He told his colleagues it was time to take a step back.

The board appointed Trustee John Colgate Jr. to be the new deputy mayor.

Quick was appointed three years ago to fill a vacancy on the village board after having served as chairman of the planning board, on which he has served since 1997. The former chief executive of Quick & Reilly, a national discount brokerage firm, and former president of the American Stock Exchange, he is now with the brokerage firm of Burke & Quick. He also is chairman of the board at Mercy Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital.

Asked about his goals as chief executive of the village, Quick replied: “I’d just like to keep the village as nice as it’s been kept by the previous mayors.”

At the same time, Cornelius J. Reid Jr., chairman of the zoning board of appeals, stepped down after 31 years on the board, many of them as chairman. He served on the village board from 1964 to 1968. Board member P. Key Bartow is the new chairman.
