New mayor doesn’t reappoint village attorney

New Asharoken Mayor Gregory Letica did not reappoint Ken Savin, who served as the village's attorney for four years.

During Letica’s campaign, he said, if elected, he would hire a new village attorney. Savin's one-year contract expired July 2, and he said he knew he wouldn't be rehired.

“I am disappointed that I am not going to be able to finish things I started,” Savin said.

Letica was sworn in as mayor at Monday’s meeting. When asked why he did not reappoint Savin, Letica said, “It was in the best interest of the village to get a new village attorney.”

Letica said he hopes to make an appointment at the next board meeting, Aug. 6. The board of trustees has to vote on the mayor’s selection.

In the interim, former village attorney Laure Nolan will serve as the village’s special assistant district attorney, at an hourly rate of $200. The board OK’d this at its meeting on Monday.

She will represent the village in village court, which happens once a month. Nolan was the village’s attorney from 1994 to 2008.
