New Riverhead zoning for assisted-living units

Riverhead’s town board has approved a new zoning category, which will open the way to construction of long-term assisted-living facilities for people 65 and over.
Under the new zoning, developers can construct affordable assisted-living or affordable congregate care communities on lots of at least 15 acres, located near shopping, transportation and medical facilities.
The housing units can be from 350 to 1,050 square feet, depending on their use. Builders who purchase development rights from other properties can construct up to eight units per acre.
No land in the town is currently zoned for the new Residence RC use, but property owners can apply to the town board for rezoning. The town board voted 5-0 to approve the new zoning category on Tuesday night.
