New skate park in Bethpage moves forward

Oyster Bay moved forward with several park improvement projects at Tuesday's town board meeting, including a new skate park in Bethpage and new lighting at the Centre Island Beach Athletic Field.

The board authorized receiving bids for construction of the new skate park in Bethpage — the first such facility in the town since officials closed the skate park at Allen Park in Farmingdale several years ago due to residents’ complaints about noise.

And the board adopted a resolution awarding a bid of $334,120 to Relle Electric Corp. of Holbrook for the athletic field lighting. Officials said the work would allow more field time and better illumination for the sports leagues that play there.

Town spokeswoman Phyllis Barry said Bethpage Community Park is more suitable for a skate park because it does not closely abut homes.

Also at the meeting, the town awarded a $379,281 bid for ocean pavilion improvements at Tobay Beach south of Massapequa. The work, officials said, is needed for routine wear and tear.
