Smithtown school board trustee Theresa Knox was sworn in Tuesday night as the board’s new vice president, replacing Scott Martella, who resigned from the board earlier this month.

Knox, 59, of Nesconset, is in her second three-year term on the school board. Her term expires in June 2013. She previously served on the board for two terms, from 2000 to 2006, and returned to the board in 2007.

Martella resigned Nov. 8, citing potential conflicts of interest with his job as Suffolk County representative to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.

The school board intends to appoint Martella’s replacement at its Dec. 13 meeting, board president Gladys Waldron said. She said the board was considering six candidates to fill the vacancy.

The appointed board member will complete Martella’s term, which expires June 30, Waldron said.
