Man arrested in Bronx

after 1 dead, 3 hurt

A 48-year-old man was in custody after police investigating a report of an emotionally disturbed man in a Bronx home found an 87-year-old woman dead and three other people injured.

The NYPD said Alice Durso was removed unconscious and unresponsive from the Hollywood Avenue home after police responded to an emergency call at 7:23 a.m. Thursday. Authorities said she had head trauma and was declared dead at the scene in the Throggs Neck neighborhood. Police said a 67-year-old woman with an injured arm, a 55-year-old man with a head injury and a 56-year-old woman with a facial laceration were taken to the hospital.

Police said the man in police custody was taken to Jacobi Hospital for treatment and evaluation.

Big New Year cleanup

for sanitation crews

While everybody else headed home after the party, a small army of New York City sanitation workers sprang to action New Year's morning, ridding streets of tons of revelers' debris.

Sanitation spokeswoman Kathy Dawkins said noisemakers, confetti and paper streamers from New Year's Eve were erased and streets reopened by 7 a.m.

It was all in a morning's work for 178 street cleaners. They rode over two dozen mechanical sweepers and marched through streets with 38 leaf blowers and scores of other equipment to restore midtown Manhattan.

Last year, workers removed 52.3 tons of debris. Dawkins says the city won't have an exact number for this year until today or Monday.

The workers sprang to action immediately after the 11,875-pound ball dropped atop 1 Times Square to ring in 2015.

Charges upgraded

in death of infant

Police said charges have been upgraded against a father accused of assaulting his 4-month-old son who later died.

The baby, Nevin Jandu, died Christmas Eve at a Queens hospital where he was being treated for brain damage and other injuries. On Wednesday, police said the father, Jagsheer Singh, was arrested on a murder charge.

Queens prosecutors already arraigned Singh on assault and endangering the welfare of a child charges. They said Singh told investigators the baby fell off a changing table Saturday.

But authorities said doctors found the child sustained multiple skull fractures and other traumatic injuries inconsistent with Singh's account.
