NYPD cop charged with driving drunk

An off-duty NYPD homicide detective was arrested for driving drunk and refusing to take a breath analyzer test after colliding with another vehicle in Brooklyn, authorities said.

Det. James Nash, 53, rammed his 2000 Cadillac Escalade into another vehicle on the corner of Quentin Road and West 5th Street about 3:50 p.m. Wednesday in Sheepshead Bay, court records show.

He was stopped more than an hour later -- at West 4th Street and Avenue P -- and was allegedly slurring his speech. He had watery eyes and smelled of booze, according to the criminal complaint.

Nash has been a police officer for more than 20 years and is assigned to Brooklyn South Homicide, police said.

Several NYPD officers have been arrested recently because of drinking incidents. Last month Det. Jay Poggi, 58, was arrested for allegedly getting drunk with his partner during their shift and then accidentally shooting him in the wrist. He then allegedly drove him to the hospital.

A few days later another off-duty NYPD officer, Brendan Cronin, 27, was charged with getting drunk and shooting a man six times in Westchester.

He was released without bail and his next court appearance is June 27.

Council honors teen who survived shooting

The 13-year-old boy who was shot in the eye last month was honored by the City Council yesterday for being an inspiration to all New Yorkers for his bravery, Councilman Mathieu Eugene said in a statement.

Gama Droiville was shot twice in the head and right eye about noon as he and his aunt waited for a bus on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn on April 14. Eduardo Dolphy, 24, the alleged intended target, was shot in the leg.

Kareem Potomont, 20, has been charged in the shootings.

Droiville, a choir boy at the French Speaking Baptist Church in Brooklyn, said his doctors told him he will probably not regain vision in his eye.

"Jesus loves you and I forgive you," Droiville said of Potomont earlier this month.
