New York City briefs
New parks, shops
planned for B'klyn
Downtown Brooklyn's revitalization is about to get a big boost.
Mayor Bill de Blasio announced new investments for the area yesterday that would help create new parks and shops and other retail. The announcement came after the 10-year anniversary of Downtown Brooklyn's rezoning, which the mayor said helped to put the spotlight on the borough.
"This is one of the city's great success stories, and we have an incredible opportunity to take these stunning communities, parks and institutions and knit them together," he said in a statement.
Several new businesses, hotels and shops sprung up following the 2004 Downtown Brooklyn rezoning and the plan will build on the rezoning in a number of ways, according to the mayor
The city will work with the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership to redevelop the Brooklyn Strand, the 21-acre space between Borough Hall and Brooklyn Bridge Park that includes greenways, pedestrian plazas and parks.
Suspect sought
in subway attack
The NYPD yesterday released a photo of a man accused of pummeling a 44-year-old deaf man on an F train in Brooklyn last week.
The suspect, who appears to be 50 to 60 years old, allegedly punched the victim repeatedly in the face while they rode a southbound F train around 4 p.m. on July 7. An NYPD spokesman said the attack was unprovoked.
The victim was able to get off the train at the 18th Avenue station in Kensington, while the suspect stayed behind, the NYPD said. The victim was treated for a busted bottom lip at Maimonides Medical Center, police said.
The photo of the suspect -- taken by a witness -- shows him wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and black sneakers.
Doctor says strip club behind scam, sues
A doctor is suing a Manhattan strip club he says was in on a scheme to drug him and charge $135,000 to his credit card.
New Jersey cardiologist Zyad Younan's lawsuit Wednesday is the latest chapter in a tawdry tale that made national headlines in June.
That's when prosecutors indicted four women and a club manager allegedly involved in the scheme.
Younan's lawsuit comes in response to one the Chelsea club filed against him in May after he challenged the charges as fraudulent.
