7-Eleven has joined a growing list of national retailers to yank Rolling Stone's controversial issue featuring Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on the cover.

"Our franchises and operations people, particularly in the greater New England area, felt strongly that we should take this position," Margaret Chabris, director of corporate communication for the convenience store chain, told The Dallas Morning News on Thursday. "We took a look at it and said, 'Yes, we'll support that decision and make that for all the stores we operate.' "

There are about 2,000 7-Eleven stores nationwide. Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid are among the other retailers that have refused to sell the Aug. 1 issue.

Rolling Stone editors have defended the cover story, saying it "falls within the traditions of journalism."

The New York Times featured the same Twitter profile photo of a shaggy-haired Tsarnaev wearing an Armani Exchange graphic T-shirt on one of its May covers.
