New York City police say members of a street gang discovered one of their recruits was gay, so they brutally beat and tortured him and two other people.

Commissioner Ray Kelly said Friday that seven people were arrested on charges of assault, unlawful imprisonment, sodomy and menacing as hate crimes in the attacks earlier this week. Police were searching for two other suspects.

Kelly says the suspects are members of a gang who call themselves the "Latin King Goonies." Police say the gang members discovered a 17-year-old recruit had sex with a 30-year-old man, so they beat the teen and sodomized him with the wooden plunger handle. Police say they later beat the 30-year-old, and another 17-year-old they believed was gay.
