8 firefighters injured in fire atop 5-story building

Almost 200 New York City firefighters responded to fight a four-alarm rooftop blaze yesterday at a Manhattan residential apartment building, the fire department said.

Eight firefighters were treated for minor injuries sustained after the 5:36 p.m. fire alarm at 240 East Houston St., officials said.

The eight injured were treated for minor burns, smoke inhalation or other heat-related problems, officials said. No residents were reported injured.

The fire, which broke out on the roof of the 5-story building, was largely contained to that area, officials said, and was brought under control at 7:27 p.m.

The cause of the blaze was unknown last night, and still under investigation.
