The long awaited 9/11 Memorial Museum will be open to the public on May 21, the memorial's board announced Monday.
The museum, which went through years of planning and construction, will include several artifacts, personal stories and other memorabilia related to the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001 and 1993.
Families of victims, survivors, and lower Manhattan residents will be able to get an early peek at the museum during the a special dedication period from May 15 through May 20, when it will remain open for 24 hours for those members.
"It will be a tremendous privilege to walk the completed 9/11 Memorial Museum for the first time with those who are a part of this defining period of our nation's history," 9/11 Memorial President Joe Daniels said in a statement.
The museum will charge a $24 fee for most visitors when it opens to help cover the cost of the annual $63 million operating budget.
