It’s easy to dream about strutting around the office in a curve-hugging shift dress, a la Joan Holloway, or making an entrance in a perfect suit, a la Don Draper. A little tougher is making those crave-worthy fashions from “Mad Men,” whose fourth season premieres Sunday, transition from the 1960s to 2010.

So, we sought advice from “Mad Men” costume designer Janie Bryant — and found modern pieces that embody the spirit of the characters without being costume-y.

“If you’re going to wear vintage, stick to one piece,” Bryant said.

Because today’s Madison Avenue could use a little jolt — but not a shockwave — from the 1964 version.

JOAN HOLLOWAY (Christina Hendricks)
Joan’s a bombshell who knows how to work her curves. This season, expect more patterns and ruffles to grace Joan’s signature figure-flattering shift dresses and pencil skirts.

Style tip: Pin a beautiful brooch on a shift dress.

BETTY DRAPER (January Jones)
Always the picture of perfection, Betty glows in pastels, beautiful prints, ladylike jewels and, of course, plenty of pearls. One of Bryant’s biggest inspirations for Betty’s wardrobe this season is Jackie Kennedy.

Style tip: Pair a brocade cocktail dress or retro-shape frock with modern heels.

PEGGY OLSON (Elisabeth Moss)
“It’s a man’s world and she’s continued to grow in it,” Bryant said of career gal Peggy and her inspiration for the more fashion-forward, fun pieces the character wears this season.

Style tip: Make a sweater set cool by wearing it with a mini-skirt or leggings.

DON DRAPER (Jon Hamm)
Don’s color palette this season has shifted to include darker shades. “That’s a basic representation of what has happened last time we see him in Season 3,” Bryant said. “It’s a big change.” But don’t worry, Draper fashion fans: The classic lighter gray suit is still “mixed in,” Bryant said.

Style tip: Stick with a skinny silhouette: a jacket with a narrow lapel, tailored trousers  and a skinny tie.
