A New Jersey transit train strikes tractor trailer, injures 10

A New Jersey Transit train struck a tractor trailer at the Main Street intersection in Little Falls, N.J. Wednesday morning, injuring 10 people, according to NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder.

None of the injuries were life threatening and the victims were transported to a hospital for treatment. About 71 people were on board the Montclair-Boonton train when it slammed into the trailer, according to Snyder.

The driver of the tractor trailer failed to navigate a tight turn, backed into the crossing gate on the track and took down several power lines, according to the preliminary investigation. The gate was operating correctly before the trailer struck it.

Around 8:15 a.m., the train, unable to stop, struck the trailer.

The driver was issued two citations, a crossing violation and one for careless driving. The investigation is ongoing.

Travel advisories were in effect during Wednesday evening's commute, and a bus line replaced the train service in the Little Falls area until the route goes back online.
