Kris Allen started the year off on a happy but scary note.

The "American Idol" winner announced that he and wife Katy O'Connell are expecting their first child together - and that the couple got into a serious car accident on New Year's Day.

"Thank you @ford for equipping me with a car that kept my whole family ... and the little one we have on the way safe," the 27-year-old singer tweeted.
He followed up by writing: "Yes I got in a really bad wreck tonight and yes I'm having a lil baby. #gonnabeadaddy."

Allen broke his wrist during the crash, but his injury will not keep him from kicking off his Out Alive tour, which begins on Jan. 8 in Vermont and is slated to hit Manhattan's City Winery on Jan. 12.

"The #OutAliveTour is still on ... Glad to make it out of this #outalive," he tweeted, along with a photo of his wrecked silver car.
