Anders Breivik uttered "cries of joy" as he carried out the Utoeya, Norway massacre last July, according to witness testimony at his trial Wednesday, published reports said.
"If I had to spell it out, it would be woo-hoo. Obviously cries for joy," said witness Tonje Brenna.
Breivik admits to killing 77 -- 69 at a youth camp on the island of Utoeya and eight in an Oslo bombing -- but denies criminal responsibility.
He also insisted he never laughed or smiled, according to reports.
"Why would I have laughed when I was there?" he said. "It was horrible. I did not smile."
He said the Labour Party youth camp he attacked was a "legitimate target" because he was defending Norway from multiculturalism and waves of Muslim immigration that he blames on left-leaning "traitors."
The trial is likely to pivot on whether Breivik is ruled insane or not.
If deemed sane, he will face the maximum 21-year prison sentence. If found criminally insane, he will be admitted to a psychiatric care unit.
