ASPCA asking owners to retrieve pets made homeless by Sandy

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is asking all owners of the 140 animals left behind at the "emergency boarding facility" it established in Bed Stuy after Sandy to fetch their cats and dogs before the shelter closes down.

In a statement released Thursday that did not specify an exact closure date, the ASPCA announced it is "winding down" the emergency shelter and "will pursue placement options for all animals that remain unclaimed."

People who have a pet at the facility or are searching for one they lost during or after the storm are urged to visit the facility at 1508 Herkimer St. between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. or call the Hurricane Sandy Pet Hotline at 347-537-9935.
