Assembly passes medical pot bill, unlikely to pass Senate

Albany's latest attempt to legalize medical marijuana won't be going anywhere soon.

Although the Assembly passed a bill Wednesday night that would permit use of the drug for some terminally ill patients, the state Senate and governor have no intention of making it a reality.

State Sen. Diane Savino (D-Staten Island), who sponsored a version of the bill, said it most likely would not be put up for a vote before the session ends next week.

Under the rules of the Assembly bill, approved patients and doctors would be registered with the state before they can get the prescribed pot.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said he opposes the use of medical marijuana, but is, however, advocating the decriminalization of possessing small amounts of pot.
