Attorney accused in NYPD gun license scandal still handling permits

A lawyer for John Chambers, the attorney accused of paying bribes for gun licenses at the NYPD and in Nassau County, said he was still handling gun permit applications for clients while his case was pending.
“He’s acting as a lawyer and continuing to apply for proper pistol permits,” said Barry Slotnick, Chambers’ lawyer, following his client’s arraignment in federal court in Manhattan on Thursday. “He will continue to do so until this indictment is thrown out.”
Chambers, 62, a former Brooklyn prosecutor who specializes in gun permits, in March was accused in a complaint of paying bribes to former NYPD Sgt. David Villanueva of Valley Stream to expedite applications from Chambers’ clients and to use Nassau contacts to get help there.
He pleaded not guilty Thursday to an indictment returned last week, and his next court appearance was set for Sept. 15. Villanueva has pleaded guilty and is cooperating, prosecutors have said.
