The NYPD is searching for those who abandoned a new born baby girl Monday morning at the entrance to the 1, 2 and 3 subway lines at the 34th Street-Penn Station stop in midtown Manhattan.

Police said they received a 911 call at 9:27 a.m. and responding officers found "the infant in a sheet, wrapped in a blanket," adding the infant was "observed to be conscious and alert" when located on the stairs leading to the southbound IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line platform.

The baby was transported by responding EMS crews to Bellevue Hospital, police said.

The MTA's New York Transit President Demetrius Crichlow called the discovery of the baby, "The Miracle on 34th Street - maybe just a little earlier."

The infant was reported anonymously at the 34th Street Station where FDNY and the NYPD found the baby unattended.

The NYPD is asking anyone with information about the child to call either 911 or to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. The case is being investigated by detectives from NYPD Midtown South.

The Abandoned Infant Protection Act, New York's safe haven law, allows parents to "anonymously and safely" leave a newborn up to 30 days old at designated hospitals or staffed fire and police stations without fear of prosecution for abandonment.

A hotline to find more information about a safe haven location is at 1-866-505-SAFE. Information also is available at https://www.nationalsafehavenalliance.org/ and by calling 311NYC.
