A New York judge has denied bail for a U.S. citizen living in Costa Rica who was arrested in an online gambling prosecution that shut down three major online poker companies.

Magistrate Judge James Cott denied bail for 52-year-old Ira Rubin.

Rubin is among 11 people charged, including the founders of the three poker companies. He is accused of helping online poker companies fool banks into processing gambling proceeds.

His lawyer says the evidence is highly questionable.

In denying bail, the judge cited the defendant's lengthy record of trouble with the law, both civil and criminal.

Rubin has been in jail since his arrest in Guatemala in April. He was arrested as he prepared to fly to Thailand to put a deposit on a home there.
