Bam to drop Biden for Cuomo in 2012? Some think so

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office wouldn’t comment Monday on a report that he may be considered as President Barack Obama’s running mate in 2012.

Former New York Republican Chairman William Powers told the New York Post he predicted Obama would ask Cuomo to replace Vice President Joe Biden when he runs for re-election, noting his recent legislative accomplishments including same-sex marriage, ethics reform and a property-tax cap. Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown had also previously suggested Obama may call on Cuomo.

"I don't think there's any doubt Obama is going to pick him as his running mate,” Powers told the Post. “The president is in trouble and Biden doesn't bring anything to his ticket.”

But Hunter College political science professor Jamie Chandler said it’s unlikely Obama would tap Cuomo, or that the first-term governor would even be interested.

“Historically, that doesn’t happen very often,” Chandler said, adding, “I don’t think that will happen.”

Chandler said that although Obama’s supporters in 2008 are looking for a significant change, he would be better off if he replaced a cabinet member.

“It wouldn’t be a wise choice for Cuomo either,” Chandler added.

“You have a much better chance of being elected president if you serve a full term as governor,” Chandler said of Cuomo, who may be eyeing a presidential run in 2016. “He has a good shot if he’s able to sustain the successes he’s had over the last year.”

Spokesmen for the White House, Governor and Democratic National Committee declined to comment.
