Barriers to be installed on parkway near Bronx Zoo crash site

New barriers are being installed along the Bronx highway where seven people died after the SUV they were riding in flew off of it during a tragic car crash on Sunday.
Workers began putting up 6,000 feet of cement slabs along both sides of the Bronx River Parkway Wednesday morning in three spots, officials said Wednesday. The areas under maintenance include the viaduct over the Bronx Zoo, where the SUV carrying the seven relatives slammed into a median before plunging 60 feet into a portion of the zoo closed to the public.
The barriers will be nearly three feet tall and wide. The work is expected to be done by the end of next week.
Killed in Sunday's crash were driver Maria Nunez Gonzalez, 45, and her daughter, Jazlyn, 10; her sister, Maria Nunez Rosario, 39, and her sister's two daughters, Naily, 7, and Marlyn, 3; and her parents, Jacobo Nunez, 85, and Ana Julia Martinez, 81.
Police believe the SUV was speeding, but the cause of the crash is still being investigated.
