Behind the Curtain: 'Bombers' Broadway bound
"Bronx Bombers," Eric Simonson's new drama exploring past and present players of the Yankees, which just finished an Off-Broadway run, will transfer to Broadway's Circle in the Square in January. Peter Scolari and Tracy Shayne, who are married, are set to take over as Yogi Berra and Carmen Berra. Those were roles played by Richard Topol and Wendy Makkena in the Off-Broadway mounting. Topol took over as Yogi at the last minute after Joe Pantoliano dropped out during rehearsals.
Upcoming 'Les Miz' revival announces initial casting
Initial casting has been announced for the upcoming Broadway revival of "Les Miz," which will begin performances at the Imperial Theatre in March. The principal leads include Ramin Karimloo (who is currently appearing in "Les Miz" in Toronto) as Jean Valjean, Will Swenson ("Hair") as Javert, Caissie Levy ("Hair") as Fantine and Nikki M. James ("The Book of Mormon") as Eponine.
Bond to star in early Brecht play at Classic Stage
Avant-garde performance artist Justin Vivian Bond, who is probably best known as half of the "Kiki and Herb" drag duo, will star in Classic Stage Company's upcoming staging of Brecht's early farce "A Man's a Man" as a canteen proprietress. The production, which starts performances in January, will include music by Duncan Sheik ("Spring Awakening").
Warlow to exit 'Annie,' Raines set to be Warbucks
Although the Broadway revival of "Annie" is set to shutter in early January, Anthony Warlow, the Australian actor playing Oliver Warbucks, is departing the production a month before the final performance. Ron Raines, who played Ben Stone in the recent Broadway revival of "Follies," will take his place starting Dec. 10.
'Around the World in 80 Days' to go Off-Broadway
Orson Welles and Cole Porter's musical version of "Around the World in 80 Days," which premiered on Broadway in 1946, will be presented at Off-Broadway's Mint Theater in December by Lost Musicals, a London company known for its semi-staged performances of rare musicals. The massive original production of "Around the World in 80 Days" featured everything from fireworks to a mechanical elephant.
