'Spider-Man' The Foxwoods Theatre, the oversized, 1,932-seat venue where "Spider-Man" currently plays, is apparently being put up for sale by its owner Live Nation Entertainment, as first reported by Playbill.com.
But fear not for Spidey, as the show is expected to soldier on despite the ownership change. Here's hoping the theater lands a less tasteless name in the process.
'Edwin Drood' revival extends four weeks While I am quite glad to hear that the Roundabout Theatre Company's lavish revival of "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" has been extended by four weeks into March, in light of its rave reviews, it ought to have been converted to an open run last month. Unfortunately, the production's ticket sales have been kind of soft, with weekly grosses hovering around $350,000. Last summer, the Jim Parsons-led revival of "Harvey" grossed twice as much at the same theater.
Try memorizing this show's title ... You've got to hand it to the trendy Off-Broadway company Soho Rep for picking shows with strange, long-winded, but very intriguing titles. It is currently presenting "We Are Proud to Present a Presentation About the Hero of Namibia, Formerly Known as Southwest Africa, from the German Sudwestafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915." On Tuesday, the company announced that it will stage something called "A Public Reading of an Unproduced Screenplay About the Death of Walt Disney" in the spring.
Cicely Tyson to take 'The Trip to Bountiful' The Signature Theatre Company's 2005 revival of Horton Foote's wistful family drama "The Trip to Bountiful," starring Lois Smith, ought to have transferred to Broadway. But even if that production won't be resurrected, this beautiful play about an elderly woman attempting to return to her hometown deserves to be seen again. It was revealed this week that Emmy winner and Oscar nominee Cicely Tyson will star in a revival this spring at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
Broadway audiences mostly tourists, women The findings of the Broadway League's latest demographics study, which were announced Monday, are no surprise. According to the report, two-thirds of all tickets to Broadway shows are purchased by tourists. In fact, one-fifth of tickets are purchased by foreign tourists. It's also no surprise to learn that two-thirds of the audience is composed of females and that nearly half of all tickets are now purchased online. Overall grosses for the 2011-12 season reached about $1.14 billion, an all-time high.
