Betsey Johnson debuts dress line at Macy's
Betsey is back, babes!
After filing for bankruptcy and closing all 63 of her stores last year, designer Betsey Johnson has returned to the fashion world with a glamtastic, Betsey-like bang.
Debuting her new line of spring dresses at Macy's Herald Square on March 13, the 70-year-old icon said the flirty and flashy energy behind her garments is the same, but the styles appeal to a wider variety of women.
"It's not so Betsey, Betsey, Betsey, but it still has those elements I love," Johnson told us. "It's more sophisticated."
It also has a lower price point, with frocks ranging from $99 to $249, and a more honed-in focus on wearability.
"I tried to make everything stretchy. Everything has a little elastic. I would talk to stewardesses, and they would tell me they couldn't wear my clothes because they were too tight or too expensive," Johnson said.
The company was bought last year by the brand Steve Madden.
But don't expect Johnson to just sit back and relax now that the dress line is out. In September, she plans to sell the exercise gear she showed off during Fashion Week last month.
"These don't look like workout clothes. It's a new category," Johnson said. "It's shirts and sweatshirts and more hangout stuff. I am so excited."
Extra! Extra! Betsey doles out love to amNY
Betsey hearts amNewYork!
“Oh, I love amNewYork!” the legendary designer said during our interview with her on March 13. “You guys cover anything and everything. It’s so fun to read — not like that political stuff.”
Thanks, Betsey ... we love you too!
