A bicyclist was killed yesterday morning when he apparently ran a red light and was struck by a car in the Morrisania section of the Bronx, police said.

Walter Ayala, 36, who lived at 1550 Midford Pl. in Tremont, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ayala was going westbound on St. Paul's Place when he was hit by a Toyota Camry, which was traveling north on Third Avenue, said an NYPD spokeswoman.

No citations were issued to the driver in the accident, although the investigation continues.

According to the city Department of Transportation there was no bike lane at the location where Ayala was killed.

The cyclist fatality rate remains unchanged in the past decade, despite the increasing popularity of cycling.
