Bidding for Lee Harvey Oswald's coffin begins at $1K

It’s a coffin that will complement any conspiracy theorist’s collection: the pine box in which Lee Harvey Oswald was once buried. And it can be yours if the price is right.

Online bidding opened at $1,000 for the morbid memorabilia, and had reached more than $5,000 by Wednesday afternoon, according to Los Angeles-based auction house Nate D. Sanders.

Oswald, the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, was buried in a Texas cemetery until 1981. He was exhumed because his widow sought proof he was actually buried there — he was. But the casket had suffered extensive water damage, and Oswald had to be re-interred in a new box.

“We got a call from the funeral home that this was a coffin that Mr. Oswald’s brother had disposed of after Lee Harvey was exhumed. I never expected that call, but I got it,” auctioneer Nate Sanders told msnbc.com.

The coffin auction ends Dec. 16. Other JFK-related relics are up for bid, including a bloodstained section of a seat that was in the limo that Kennedy rode when he was assassinated.
